[ILUG] New post

[ILUG] New post

Philip Daly philip at servecast.com
Wed Sep 20 16:54:17 IST 2006

Hi,

I have posted this previously so please accept my apologies for
repetition.

We are looking to expand our network team and are looking for candidates
who may be interested. We offer on-line multimedia services (streaming)
to some of the largest sport and business organizations. As we use a
wide berth of state of the art equipment we are looking for candidates
with a good technical background and a willingness to work in such an
environment. Ideally the candidate would need to have high level
experience using, among others, Linux-type systems, Cisco networking and
proprietary media platforms and also have a solid understanding of the
mechanisms of the Internet. The post will require a more evening and
weekend work and is not, as such, 9 to 5. If you are interested, please
respond by e-mail with a current CV.

I look forward to hearing from you

Thanks

I didn't want this to start as a troll, but we're slowly getting there.

Agreed that NFS is evil, agreed that async is evil. He's clever enough
to make his own choices. I have to say i missed the part where he said
that all was fine until recently, otherwise i might not have advised
on using async. In fact, i just realised we're using sync at work
whereas at home, I ain't.

Sooo, in short, sorry for the misunderstanding there (and take a chill
pill :)

Try Pawel's suggestion (bigger socket buffers), also remove the
'sync' from the client mount, unless you're truly paranoid. With sync
NFS export the server already guarantees data hits disk when client
thinks it should. Synchronous on the client seems overkill (and
definitely will be slow, if it does what I think it might - if not
it's just redundant)..

Also, make sure you're using TCP, unless your network is 100%
congestion free (any kind of speed-bridging anywhere: you want to use
TCP for NFS).

NFS ---> Nightmare File System....

On our producton servers we use the following settings in /etc/fstab:

nvgm004.muc:/vol/vgm069/qgm01174 /usr/sap/trans nfs
rw,bg,vers=3,tcp,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,hard,intr,nodev,nosui

But in my experience, often somewhat still somewhat suboptimally
unfortunately. It's introspecting on DPMS/EDID info from
the display etc., so it's at the whim of the manufacturer.

(Even if it gets it *right*, IMNSHO you then have to deal with the
horrible and now even "standard" PC gamma (thankfully even something
like xgamma -gamma 1.8, though very coarse, can get things looking
reasonably decent on an LCD display))

As it works out you need to do a Xorg --configure, this will put a
xorg11-new.cfg in your home directory. But it didnt work out me. I think
its a view port issue but the screen is a bit scrambled and moved to the
right. I do not have the config file to hand. I'll google a bit more and
if I can not find a solution,I'll post the config file tonight and see
if anything pops up.

Thanks

Hope it's not too off topic.

This is for my home lan,
(my children tend to leave their machines on 24\7)
and my 2007 (hopefully) 3D render farm (WinXP)

Is it possible?
to boot\shutdown\start-programs on xp machines from Linux,
any particular distro more suitable than another? (currently using fc5)

I've done a search on the usual places and didn't see what was looking
for:

Couple of musings
1) Does samba allow you start services on a remote XP machine (in the
same
vein as "net start")?
2) Can an XP app poll for a file on a network share that you
create/modify
as a signal to make things happen?

Yes. You need a domain admin account and a relatively recent version of
samba.

The manpage says this is not implemented

    RAP SERVICE
    RAP SERVICE START NAME [arguments...]
Start the specified service on the remote server. Not implemented
yet.

but I get the impression something like this (RPS not RAP) was
implemented
in the last year or so.

"New 'net rpc service' tool for managing Win32 services."
	http://us2.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.0.20.html

It also appears the converse may now work:

o The capability to manage Unix services using the Win32
    	  Service Control API.
	http://www.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.0.21.html

Presumably, but this is really a windows scripting question.
