On my machine I do modprobe -v eth1394
i.e. without eth1 and it works.
I can ifconfig it with an address and ifconfig produces the following for
the new eth1:
eth1      Link encap:UNSPEC  HWaddr
00-00-4C-01-07-00-36-B3-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
          inet addr:192.168.4.1  Bcast:192.168.4.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1

          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
