[ILUG] disaster recovery

Hi all

my linux box has recently developed a problem that I am slightly at a 
loss how to fix. I boot and get the login screen. after i enter my 
credentials the screen goes black and the keyboard freezes. Same effect 
if i hit alt-crtl-F1 in order to get a console, same effect if I chose 
the remote console option in the menu on the login screen.

Ubuntu Edgy AMD64 upgraded from dapper

currently downloading the life CD to see what I can do. sorely tempted 
to reinstall though

any suggestions?
