Try passing some arguments to the kernel and see what happens. Something 
like noapic nolapic nosmp
Disable console blanking too -> maybe there is a kernel panic and your 
not seeing it.
setterm -blank 0

If all that fails, maybe you have an issue somewhere?
memtest86 would be a good idea...
