I don't think so.
With kmail, when you set up a new Account,
you are asked if you want to use POP or IMAP,
and I opted for IMAP.
Admittedly dovecot on my desktop
seems to say it will accept IMAP or POP connections.

Are you actually using kmail + dovecot without NFS?
If so, where does kmail store your email?

I can get exactly what I want by connecting to my desktop
from my laptop with ssh, and then running kmail on the desktop.
My question is, can I get attain the same outcome with IMAP?

I did google for this, and while I didn't look at a huge number of sites,
none of the ones I looked at seemed to concern themselves
with the precise question I am asking.
If anyone has such an URL I would be grateful for it.

I realise I could attain the desired end by running a differnt mailer
in place of kmail.
