Uhmm, wasn't maildir file format specifically designed to work with
NFS?
All half-modern servers and clients should support flock() on NFS now
(one big problem on Linux was accidently not having lockd started on
boot, but now that's automatic when NFS is loaded), which means even
mbox over NFS should work, unless the clients are borken (borken
even for local access..).
