[ILUG] thoughts and a question

[ILUG] thoughts and a question

I am a relative newbie who has been trying to help a complete newbie with Ubuntu Dapper Drake lately.
I dont know if this the right forum but here are a few of my thoughts on this.
I have spent the last two weeks zipping between files on the command line, editing with vim and cruising the forums for that one elusive post that will solve my woes.It was a steep learning curve but GOD it was exciting!I have not had a thrill like it or had a feeling of contentedness like this since I was a schoolboy learning DOS commands.
Long live Linux!!
Anyway, onto the question.
I had an IBM thinkpad T22 that successfully installed Edubuntu 6.06 but would frreze on boot after the splash screen.
I tried to edit the grub/menu.lst with acpi=off and pci=off as well as replacing acpi with apm but no joy.Eventually from reading around I edited the X11/xorg.conf by adding
Option "BusType" "PCI"
Option "DmaMode" "None"
in the "Devices" field.
This did the trick. The question is...what exactly did I do and how did this solve the problem?
Sorry for rambling,
cheers,
Mark
