I must say that whatever difference there is probably isn't huge in
the real world so I agree with whoever posted to just go with the
cheaper option.
However, for interest sake I did a quick google. And regardless of the
number of procs and cores involved these two opteron models are from
different generations and use different sockets. It appears that both
of them have a built in memory controller too and the 246s have a DDR
controller whereas the 1212 has a DDR2 controller. I don't know what
the numbers would be, but in theory you'd get higher RAM I/O
throughput with the single dual core 1212.
