A friend and myself are toying with the idea of using our call a friend for
free mobile allowance to connect (albeit at a low speed) to a home server.
Basically the idea is to dial into a ppp server from mobiles to a gsm modem
connected to the home server.
The issue I have is that I'm not running full pcs as server anymore so the
only interfaces available to connect to are usb (onto a soekris net4801
running freebsd based pfsense or an NSLU2 running debian) or rs232 serial
(on the soekris running freebsd or through usb to serial adapter connecting
to the nslu2).
Has anyone any experience of this? Specifically I'm looking for a gsm modem
suitable for this kind of setup that is compatible with linux or freebsd. As
this is just a home project, money is an issue. We can do it pretty easily
with a pcmcia modem plus usb to pcmcia adapter but the adapter costs around
€200!
Thanks,
Patrick
