 all good questions!
 some not-as-good answers ....

  | Are you sure it isn't flaky hardware?

no; I've no idea. it does seem to be consistent,
despite me being uncertain what the precise trigger
is (other than _somehow_ involving |AltGr|). and
there is no other evidence of keyboard flakiness.

generalismo google finds some suggestive hints a
LED (which I am assuming is the mysterious one) is
illuminated because of an “alternative group”,
whatever the fsck that is .... ?

  | Have you tried replicating with another kb?

don't have another (working) keyboard. so no can-do.

( I neglected to mention in my previous post, but if
it matters, this is a USB keyboard. )

  | Do other OSs not have the problem?

no idea. first off, I'm uncertain how to reproduce.
and second, I do not have, and refuse to run even if
 I did have, microshite's stupidware.

cheers!
