[ILUG] Help sought with temporary re-location ...

I'm going to Italy for a few weeks.
I hope to have broadband there.
Assuming that is so, I'm wondering about a couple of things.

1. Email.
I have an IMAP (dovecot) server on my desktop,
which I use for accessing mail on my laptop in my house.

I guess I should use encrypted IMAP, on port 993?
I've opened a peephole there on my ADSL modem.

But can I actually use encryped IMAP with dovecot?
If so, how do I set it up?
I looked at /etc/dovecot.conf but it appears to be infinitely long.

Actually, I don't think I have dovectot working properly on my system.
If anyone is running dovecot, particularly under Fedora,
I'd be very grateful if you could send me your /etc/dovecot.conf .

2. News.
I currently use news.eircom.net as my news server.
I guess that is only available if one accesses it
from an eircom account?
I use gmane for some mailing list/newsgroup combinations,
but it doesn't seem to carry comp.os.linux newsgroups.

Is there a free news-server carrying these groups?

Can one use google groups with a news client (knode in my case)?

Your advice and suggestions, as ever, gratefully received.

Ps, I'm leaving tomorrow ...
