Yes you can use secure imap with dovecot 

near the beginning of dovecot.conf 
protocols = imap pop3 imaps pop3s

basically in my config I have pop3 secure pop3 imap and secure imap

Why not just use a VPN to your home machine that way you can access the
newsgroups too and you would have no issues with dovecot being open to
the outside world 

Expect eircom DSL to go down about 2 days after you leave and not return
until you have been home 10 days ;-)
