I discovered by chance when I went to the loo
that firefox did in fact come alive after 5-10 minutes,
so I was able to get into my modem in Ireland
and open a pinhole for IMAPS.

I'm just going through the 840 messages waiting for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I think I tried all the ones on this list that I understood,
without any joy.
