It's probably a NAT killing the "idle" connection.
Throw this into ~/.ssh/config on the client machine:
serveraliveinterval 300
serveralivecountmax 10
see ssh_config(5).
also, I seem to recall changes made to ssh to improve this,
so an upgrade (of the client side) could help.
