...or have some other way of booting, such as toms root boot or
various rescue disks. Or even your own machine as-is, if "Cannot boot
to rl5" does not exclude "can boot to rl1" or something similar.

So your answer is "dd".

if=/dev/hda1, of= some file on hdb.
