[ILUG] RMS's free software talk (transcript)

[ILUG] RMS's free software talk (transcript)

Ciaran O'Riordan ciaran at fsfe.org
Tue Jan 9 10:35:33 GMT 2007

I've put online a transcript of a recent talk by Richard Stallman,
"Free Software and the Future of Freedom":
http://fsfeurope.org/documents/rms-fs-2006-03-09.en.html

It's broken into sections where he explains free software, why it's defined
the way it is, how the GNU project started, why it started the way it did,
what problems we face now, how we waste our market pressure, about patents,
about copyright/DeCSS, about how we need to raise awareness for all the
coming problems that some companies are making for free software, etc. etc.

The corresponding audio is here:
http://mjesec.ffzg.hr/~dpavlin/stallman2006/free_software_movement_and_the_future_of_freedom_zagreb_09_march_2006.ogg

Richard's free software talk doesn't change much each time he gives it, but
the last time someone made a transcript of his general free software talk
was 1986, so the changes in twenty years are pretty big. Here's the 1986
talk for comparison:

There are also transcripts elsewhere of the other three topics he talks on:
