Sorry, I probably wasn't clear enough. :-)
Yes, Thunderbird will check all of the folders. For a while. Then it
forgets some of them and only checks others. Then it stops altogether.
Then it starts working again. Maybe it's my IMAP server (dovecot) or
maybe it's the number of folders involved. I don't know.
I couldn't have been bothered to track down properly the exact problem
that was happening. I just got rid of Thunderbird and installed
Evolution which despite bringing half of Gnome with it works rather well
for my case.
