Is the kernel and/or underlying FS also old-ish? is it possible you're
hitting a 2 gig or other limit with logs files? (As the domain is hit
a lot, I assume a lot of logging going on). This doesn't really fit
with restarting the service fixing it, and with nothing getting logged
in the error log. But might be worth checking out. Other than that, is
there anything else Apache might be waiting for? Custom mods? CGI that
could be buggy? A connection to a DB? If this is a LAMP type set up,
you might have an issue with the M and P bits.
