this is a bit flaky, but here's how I managed to do it as a test in Gimp
1. use teh Path tool to create a path.
2. use the Text tool, click somewhere, and type a sentence long enough for the
path. unfortuantely, the path went invisible for me at this point...
3. right-click on text, Layer->Text Along Path
4. right-click on text, Layer->Delete Layer
