Looks like Xft, in the absence of render extn., falls back to rendering 
antialiased text via (presumably large numbers of) core X 
Image/Pixel/Rectangle calls, rather than the core X text rendering 
calls XDrawString and so on. (xftcore.c in libXft sources).
