[ILUG] Hard disk failure

[ILUG] Hard disk failure

Hi,

My laptop's hard disk seems to have given up the ghost. I had some
backups, but some important data was not backed up yet.

I'm currently using a live ubuntu feisty to try to make an image of it
with dd, but not even the device seems to appear.

Is there anything I could do to try to access the device, or should I
just go to a data recovery company? If the latter is the only option,
could anybody give me references of companies that they dealt with?

Thanks,

Jordi Jané
