Hmm. Then might well be related to i8042 changes then, at least that
was my theory - if you look at the kernel changelogs, you'll see
modifications to it (and bear in mind that ubuntu probably
doesn't use a vanilla kernel.org kernel, either) around the 2.6.20
to 2.6.21 era.
