Indeed, this sounds quite trivial. Is there a SAN involved? Is that the 
issue?
F/W updates should be very simple. If you tell us what the gizmo is then 
we can tell you what is required.
Kernel updates are even easier. Do you have wierd drivers which you are 
worrying may fail on initrd creation or some problem.

What distribution and what hardware.....
I wouldn't get someone onsite for that to be honest.
