I had a similar issue with a DVD drive on a Sun x2100 a few months ago.
Trying to load Debian onto it, but just couldn't get it to boot from the
factory installed dvd unit. After much theoretical investigation, like
yourself I just pulled the top off, and lo: dvd data cable not plugged
in, still tiewrapped to the housing.
Goes to show that the helpdesk response of " Is it plugged in?" is not
so misguided after all.... ;p
Have a nice weekend all!
Cormac.
