That's interesting, and I'm never too comfortable with RAID-5 for some
other reasons too:

I'm not usually that worried about the performance hit, but the reliability
is definitely an issue.  From what I gather, sadly, something like raid-z
doesn't seem likely to appear on linux any time now.

On the other side, I've had some seriously unpleasant experiences with
hardware RAID controllers/drivers/firmwares.

It's a bit of a mine-field.
