I've given up on using netopia routers as routers, I just stick them
into bridged mode and use them as dumb adsl modems, and establish a ppoe
connection through them from another device (usually a hardware firewall
device, but if you're comfortable with having your linux box as a
firewall you could do the same with it, and route via a second Ethernet
card to the lan.) It has saved me countless hours of frustration in the
past.
