Given that SMART provides for doing this in the drive-firmware, while 
the drive otherwise would be idle, there must be some.

Look in the smartctl man page for 'offline' tests (the name is weird 
- it means the drive does it while idle, rather than you have to take 
the drive offline ;) ), on how to configure your drive to 
periodically scan-test the media.
