Isn't that a thing of the past?
My (old and redundant) APC (1600 something, from about 6 years ago
uses a normal serial cable at least.
One thing to bear in mind with UPSes is that batteries need replacing
about every two years, which requires an outage on any remotely
affordable UPS.
I found that the Irish electricity supply's outage rate (at least in
the Leixlip area) isn't appreciably more than that of a UPS (indeed,
it might be better)...
