I also had some fun trying to make the newer ATI cards work seamlessly with
xorg under Ubuntu. Here's by current configuration, which works extremely
well. Minor issue is that I've lied to X11 and claimed it's just one large
screen, rather than 2 x screens side by side. This means that things tend to
centre on the border between screens rather than in the centre of one or other
screen. I find this a very minor nuisance. Slightly more annoying is the
inability to view OOo Presentation slides fullscreen on one of the monitors,
for the same reason. Again, this is a minor niggle.
Using hardware acceleration and declaring the two screens to X11
independently, requesting Xinerama to span across them, resulted in some
highly frustrating redraw bugs for the mouse pointer, resulting in me having
to use guesswork to guess where the active point of the mouse pointer was on
one of the two screens. (always the secondary.)
Note also, I'm using the proprietary fglrx driver. Easiest way to get this is
probably installing EasyUbuntu and working from there.
