Many thanks! That worked like a charm. My process can now be as simple as
sudo sdparm --flexible --command=load /dev/sdg
sudo mount /dev/sdg1 /media/sdg1
... do backup ...
sudo umount /media/sdg1
sudo sdparm --flexible --command=stop /dev/sdg
stuffed in a daily/weekly script. Yay!
