[ILUG] Problems with google talk

[ILUG] Problems with google talk

Niall O Broin niall at makalumedia.com
Tue Apr 8 21:23:17 IST 2008

I wonder has anybody else been having problems lately with
googletalk? I updated Adium (the OS-X client which I use for most of
my IM needs) to the latest version, 1.2.4, on March 31, and that
evening, one other occasion since, and right now, I cannot use IM
with my google account.

The symptoms are in Adium that I get told

XMPP Message Error

Message delivery to user.name at gmail.com failed: (Code 500)

although user.name appears to Adium to be online, and can chat to me.

In Pidgin on Linux I see nearly all my contacts as offline, but those
that I don't, I can't chat to either - I get a 500 error there too.

Fring on my phone now won't connect to gtalk at all.

In a browser session to gmail, I see my contacts' status, but if I
try to initiate a chat I get told "user.name di not receive your chat"

So, I'm at a loss. I'm inclined to put the arrival of this problem
just after I upgrasded to Adium down to coincidence, as I also have
the problems with the other clients. Given the size of google's
systems, if there's some kind of problem, I can hardly be the only
one affected, hence this mail.

I have reported all this to google, but they will only get back to me
if they want more information. To be honest, it's hard to expect much
more response than that from a service I don't pay for.

Niall
