Unless the code runs through midnight the above is (possibly) pointless,
and might be making your life harder ?

Try:
	CURRENTYEAR=`date +%Y`
	CURRENTMONTH=`date +%m`
	CURRENTDAY=`date +%d`

maybe ? 

However, what is line 37 doing / trying to do? - as you say, it sounds
like it's trying to parse it as octal. (based on the error message)
