That's evaluating the CURRENTMONTH string in a numeric context,
hence the octal problem.
Change it to
OLDMONTH=$CURRENTMONTH
to keep any leading 0s, or
OLDMONTH=$((10#$CURRENTMONTH))
to strip them.
You probably want to strip them, though it depends what the
rest of your script does with OLDMONTH. You may run into
similar issues later in the script.
