[ILUG] Ubuntu Deployment....and AutoCAD, 3D-Max and Etabs

Thanks for your time and prompt reply Michael..!

Exactly training and importing of existing files issue is there! and
my company is a well known and medium size consulting company and they
are fully ready to flip from windows to Linux but the issue as you
understand is...

I have tested all three applications with WineHQ and under Xen running
windows XP virtual machine but performance is also an element which is
not illuminated.

So, I just want the Software which can act as AutoCAD, 3D-MAX and
Etabs under Linux. I am gooogling for last many days but unable to
find the best available solution of my problem.

If I could not fined the best solution the we "THE OPEN SOFT GUYS"
will fail and my company will kick me out, because I am the person who
motivated my boss to shift from WINDOWS to LINUX.....

Please help me guys...

Warm regards

Sher

So in fact Wine may be a red herring.
You are moving from Windows to Linux and require at least the
Functionality of AutoCAD, 3D Studio and Etabs.

You presumably may need to import existing files or export to other
AutoCAD users. The range of things AutoCAD is used for may mean you need
Windows or that any program at all that does some basic vector drawing
and has DXF import/export might do. You may need to consider training
issues.

The solution depends not just on the "brand label" of the packages you
use today but what other organisations you interact with, what you
actually use these for and if import of existing files must be
transparent, once off awkwardness or not important.

Wine may or may not be part of the solution. A solution without Wine
would be 1st priority to investigate.

If "/ETABS/ has been recognized as the industry standard for Building
Analysis and Design Software." rather than "Guitar Tablatures Archive:
30000 guitar tabs for rock, ska, punk, reggae," then unless this is
"rock solid" on Wine then you could have problems and better sticking to
Windows. (Pardon the slight pun).

It seems likely your application is Construction related, thus suitable
CAD and Rendering alternatives for design and visualisation of
buildings ought to be available as Linux rather than Windows Applications.

So start with investigating ETABS on Wine. If you have loads of users
and only one uses ETABS, and not all the time, consider one PC only with
XEN/ VMware etc running Linux & Windows at same time to run ETABS.

On my laptop using the Virtual Machine Approach I can run Linux Apps on
Linux and Windows Apps on Windows at same time with less issues than
WINE (needs lotsa RAM though). I also can run Linux apps on Windows
without Linux, seemlessly on Windows Desktop (by 3 methods), but that
rather defeats the object of the exercise.
