Actually
after deleting the mplayer plugins as advised by John Moylan
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=323089
and restarting system (shouldnt have been necessary but I had installed
kernel upgrades which needed a reboot)
all is well - I can view video & hear audio archives and listen to live
radio.
Cant listen to live tv feed tho - maybe network congestion???
Thanks to all who replied
