The interesting thing about Leopard (apparently - I haven't tried it) is that
the recently integrated dtrace has been knobbled for some specific
applications, which has an impact on profiling as a whole:

Kind of shows where apple's priorities lie - and it's not with their users or
application developers.

As a "media center" style app - a la Windows XP media center I suppose - you
could do worse than MythTV http://mythtv.org/. Takes a little effort to set
up and is very TV oriented (as the name implies) but also plays music files,
playlists, photos, videos, DVDs etc. Remote works fine with a bit of tweaking
and it's pretty well documented. There's a mailing list:
https://www.fdntech.com/secure/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-ireland
for mythtv users in Ireland. My old mythtv box died a couple of months ago,
and I'm looking for something powerful and quiet to replace it...
Another alternative is freevo http://freevo.sourceforge.net/. Not too bad, but
been a while since I used it.
Cheers,
Ciaran.
