Are you configured to use local (on the subnet of your cable modem) or 
remote gateway (gateway the VPN server has) when VPN connected?
The Remote end may block HTTP or not have it.

Make sure DNS & Gateway is same before & after VPN connect, i.e. your 
normal values.
