Have you looked at the MTU settings at all?

One of the frequent fliers on this is that it starts to look fine but grinds 
to a halt after trying to transfer anything which exceeds 1-1.5k.

You could test this by ifconfig'ing the MTU down a bit, possibly to around 
1300.
