Leaving phd's etc until later on can be a bit risky because "life just
happens" in the meantime - husbands/wives/partners, jobs, mortgages, kids
and so on all tend to absorb all time and energy leaving part time studies
to fall between the cracks. If you have a well defined research programme
then the best time may well be sooner (on a full time basis) rather than
later.
