| I tend to agree with Pádraig. It's been my experience that
| the Ubuntu developer majority are more concerned with adding
| new hotness to ubuntu than fixing brokenness. As far as they're
| concerned, their primary user is the home desktop user, and if

I've no idea what class(es?) of users Ubuntu is aimed at,
or, for that matter, how the Ubuntu development community
views creature freep vs. defect fixing. nonetheless,
I do have an anecdotal observation: quite a number of
customers of the embedded Linux kit provided by the
company I'm now working for seem to be using Ubuntu
for development. they presumably have a very different
profile from that of a “home desktop user” (and if
I can use myself as an example, they certainly do!).
I myself am using Kubuntu, and have been generally
impressed with how neatly most things seem to fit
together; sufficiently so that I'm (slowly!) switching
my home system from ancient SUSE 9.1 to Kubuntu. OTOH,
I'm also new to using Ubuntu regularly, and hence have
yet to go through a major upgrade.

_fair_ competition is good.
