it's a punch down.. not a (really)sharp pointy implement you're talking
about here, I suspect that you may have some *serious* hand - eye
co-ordination issues if you've managed to stab yourself with one of
these in the past :)
anyway, it's always worth while to have one about somewhere, Mine gets
dragged out for about 30 seconds every six months (usually to run an
extension of a TE coffin box), but at least I'm happy that when I'm
finished that the job's done properly *and* that I still have all my
finger tips because I wasn't using a small snips / leatherman to do the
same job!

or if you don't mind waiting a couple of days for delivery, there are
tonnes of these on ebay which even allowing for the typical P&P price
padding are still working out at half what you'll pay in Maplins for one.
