OK, did this and as far as I can tell didn't do anything silly in the
process.

Took me a while to cop this bit. /opt is empty in Hardy Heron, the
networks.py file is in
  /usr/share/vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux/resources/extra

Anyway, I added your settings as below. When I trie to fire up I got
the initial splash screen, then nothing happened. The only way out was
to force-quit. I tried both plugging in the E270 after I'd logged on,
and booting up with the E270 attached, to see if it made any difference.
No joy.

I was about to give up when I noticed your postscript. I couldn't find
a .vmc in home, but there was a .vmc2. Deleting it did the trick, but
only if I plug in the E270 before booting the machine. If I plug in the
E270 on an already booted machine, then the program just hangs. There's
also a minor annoyance in that Firefox and Evolution start up in offline
mode, and have to be told they're online.

Still, I can connect, and I'm finally mobile with Linux, so everyone's
help is much appreciated. Fingers crossed I won't encounter an
intermittent problem in a few days time.
