It's coming from a distro install iso. The initrd used to install by
anaconda is an ext2 based image. Of course this may have changed in the
most recent versions.

I'd have to test it, don't know if there is any reason for the original
to have to be an ext2 image. Suspect its just a case of carry over from
older versions of anaconda and no-one bother to update it to use cpio
instead.
