That sounds like a rather ancient ThinkPad,
as all the ones I have seen have 2 USB ports.
Also I think all relatively recent ThinkPads (less than 7 years old)
can boot from memory sticks.
It sounds to me as though your machine may be seriously ill.
What sort of beeps do you get when you try to boot?
ThinkPad witch doctors can diagnose quite a lot from that,
I think.
