The MBR is on the disk, so the BIOS has already decided what it will boot
from by the time it gets to the MBR.
If you want to eliminate the HDD as a source of the error, just remove it
physically from the laptop and then try to boot from a CD. If this doesn't
work at least you know the fault is nothing to do with the HDD.
