Is the file really 5GB in size or have you just got that much space allocated?
This might be related: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/logs.html#rotation

Note apache opens the log file in O_APPEND mode so if you just want to throw
the logs away you can truncate the file in place using `> error_log`
