Sorted the colour issue, on Solaris set TERM to dtterm, using Gnome
terminal. And if you want colours using ls the Sun version won't do,
you'll need to compile coreutils from GNU, they should be located in
/usr/local by default, then alias ls to /usr/local/bin/ls --color=always
Works a treat.
