Thanks to all for the feedback on both the quality of Acer laptops and
on Laptopsdirect as a supplier. One of the primary reasons for buying a
brand new laptop was that I'd have a warranty and some degree of useful
after-sale service if there was a hardware fault. I'd prefer to pay a
higher price for the peace of mind knowing that I have some effective
come-back if something were to go wrong. (The Laptop forum on Boards.ie
was also quite useful.)

Anyhow, it looks like I'm back to the drawing board in my search for a
good value, GNU/Linux compatible, 17" laptop.
