Suggest the following.
CTRL ALT F2 or one of them numbers below 7.
then log in and look to see if gnome-terminal is running -- if it is
kill it.
If not, install xterm sudo apt-get install xterm.
Then put that as an icon on the desktop and go hunting for
gnome-terminal settings.
~/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal
Other vital question does it happen on other users (don't know create
one as a temp user).
