My modem stopped working with Hardy and gnome-ppp for no apparent reason.
I finall got it working again using UMTSMON.sf.net (highly recommended.)
Howto for use with builtin DELL 3G modem below. You may be able to skip the
module bits if you are using the USB Huawei, I think the kernel recognises
it anyway.:
#Edit /etc/modules and add entry for the "option" module
bash$ sudo echo "option" >> /etc/modules
#The option module loads the usbserial module and is supposed to be perform
better than using usbserial alone.
#Edit /etc/modprobe.d/options and add an option for the usbserial module
(this gets loaded by the "option" module above)
Substitute your devices IDS.
bash$ echo "options usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8138" >>
/etc/modprobe.d/options
#Download and install UMTSMON from UMTSMON.sf.net
#Extract the downloaded archive run the umtsmon app (there is a dependancy
on qt-mt from the Ubuntu Repo)
#Add an APN for your network provider. I'm using O2. O2's APN is
open.internet.
Enjoy
